    Description
FRESH FROM A WONDERFUL OLD COLLECTION OF PILGRIM FURNITURE HERE IN CONNECTICUT.
A VERY RARE 17TH CENTURY "JOINED STOOL TABLE"
WITH ITS ORIGINAL DROP LEAF TOP.
THE BASE HAS BALL AND DISC TURNED LEGS, MOLDED STRETCHERS AND THE ABSOLUTE BEST ORIGINAL CARVED APRONS.
THE ENTIRE TABLE STILL RETAINING TRACES OF ITS OLD GRUNGY ORIGINAL DARK SURFACE THROUGHOUT. England, Circa 1660-1680 in WHITE OAK.
Very early form, the round THIN CUT DROP-LEAF top is all original and still retains its original hand wrought iron hinges and its original pegs in the top. The complex ball and disc turned legs are supported by molded bottom stretchers AND ARE ALL ORIGINAL AND FULLY INTACT. They still retain ALL of their ORIGINAL wooden pegs.
THE ORIGINAL CARVED APRONS ARE SUPERB. THIS STYLE OF CARVING WAS COPIED BY THE ESSEX COUNTY CABINETMAKERS OF THE AMERICAN COLONIES.
THIS VERY RARE PIECE WOULD FIT NICELY INTO AN AMERICAN PILGRIM COLLECTION.
WE USUALLY DON'S SEE THESE VERY RARE EARLY CARVED JOINT STOOL TABLES IN SUCH WONDERFUL CONDITION.
THIS IS A VERY RARE FORM.
VICTOR CHINNERY, A NOTED ENGLISH FURNITURE EXPERT WRITES IN HIS BOOK, "OAK FURNITURE THE BRITISH TRADITION" ABOUT THIS VERY RARE FORM OF JOINT STOOL. THESE PIECES WERE USED AS A JOINT STOOL WHEN THE LEAVES WERE DOWN AND YOU COULD THEN OPEN THE PIECE UP INTO A SMALL HEARTH-SIDE TAVERN TABLE.
For a very similar piece see the above reference book, page 172.
VERY FEW OF THIS VERY RARE FORM HAVE SURVIVED.
THIS PIECE IS IN FANTASTIC CONDITION.
AS STATED ABOVE, THE TOP IS ORIGINAL AS IS THE CARVED APRONS AND MOLDED STRETCHERS. THE HAND WROUGHT HINGES ARE ORIGINAL. THE TOP, APRONS AND STRETCHERS STILL RETAIN THEIR ORIGINAL WOODEN PEGS. THE PIECE HAS NEVER BEEN TAKE APART OR RESTORED.
THE SPIN OUT SLIDES FOR THE LEAVES ARE ORIGINAL.
The surface is an old grungy washed down surface with a very nice old patina. There are still traces of the original dark stain and varnish throughout the piece.
The table has a wonderful old color and patina.
This table does not have the typical 18th century coal smoke residue we generally see in the English examples. Also, there is no insect damage usually found on the later imported pieces. We believe that this table was transported to the Colonies very early in its life, probably in the late 17th or early 18th century.
This TABLE is a full 18 1/2" tall. The top is 20 1/2" by 21" when open and with both leaves down it is 10 1/2" deep.
It exhibits only the typical wear and tear you would see from nearly 400 years of use as I have shown in the photos and the only replacement is of a few screws in the hinges, (most likely to tighten them).
Also, there is an old glued shrinkage line on one of the leaves, as seen.
For s similar example see, "Furniture Treasury", by Wallace Nutting, and "Early American Antique Country Furnishings", by George Neumann. Also, see "When Oak was New", by John Fisk, and also, as stated above, "Oak Furniture the British Tradition", by Victor Chinnery.
