Description
Offered is a large Antique PRIMITIVE BENTWOOD DRY MEASURE manufactured by Daniel Cragin Company, Wilton, NH in 1800s. This antique bentwood 1 Peck dry goods measure is made of oak with an overlapped tapered joint. The joint is secured with 12 copper nails and the one piece bottom board is pegged to the sides. The outside has traces of old black paint which may not be original to the piece. The inside and the underside are unfinished. The maker marking on the inside is stamped "Daniel Cragin Manufacturers & Sealers Wilton, N.H.".It measures
11 1/2” diameter x 6 1/2" tall
. It is in great condition. There is a tiny chip on the bottom edge and a small triangular shape piece missing from the top edge of the inner piece which may have been intentional in the manufacturing. It has bumps and scratches commensurate with the age.
Measures were often made in five sizes-one quart (
5 3/4" diameter)
, then two quart (7" diameter x 4 3/8" tall), four quart (9" diameter), single peck (11" diameter x 6 1/4" tall), and one-half bushel (
14" diameter x 8" tall).
