For sale is this recently discovered
early to mid 19th century
Ame
ri
can
antique
very early figured maple, lathe-turned, reeded wooden thread spool and/or hand weaving tool, with tapered ends and with stamped high case initials

pressed into and hot branded on the spool's mid-section. This early
Ame
ri
can
maple thread spool is lathe-turned but finished by hand. The graining in the maple is figured and perhaps tiger maple, meaning this early spool dates back to the
early to mid 19th century
and well
before the
US Civil War,
when
figured
New England
maple hardwood
was often used for its decorative appeal and for its strength and density as an
Ame
ri
can
hardwood, often found in the
Northeast
of the
Unit
ed St
ates,
meaning it was local and could be easily procured and purchased for woodworking use. The uneven striped banding seen in the wood, is indicative of diseased maple hardwood, often sought out and used by cabinetmakers and
Ame
ri
can
woodworkers for its figured striations and zebra-like dark veins or banding. The thread spool or weaving tool has wonderful soft, hand rubbed surfaces. An excellent
