This is a small 18th century strike-a-lite hand painted black toleware pocket tin complete set in the desirable oval shape with all the original contents. The small domed pocket oval shaped tin case with a tight-fitting tin lid is typical for the late 1700's period. Being handmade, they came in variations of sizes, and materials. This container is made from tin and coated in black paint called toleware. The top is hand painted in a quaint and charming Folk Art country scene of a wheat field with standing sheafs of wheat, trees in the background, a small bird in flight, and to the right, a waterway with a boat. As expected, there are chips and loss to the black paint and hand painted motif; but is still very presentable, and actually in very good shape for its extreme age for a 1700’s pocket carried utilitarian tin case. This oval box has a flat bottom, is 5 1/8” long x 2 1/2“ wide x 2" deep x 3/4" tall. Weight with contents is 4.8 oz. or 137 grams. The top is slightly domed with a protruding outer border on both the top and bottom edges to help the grasp when opening the tight-fitting lid, and the box closes and stays closed properly. The contents of this pocket-sized tin container are all original, as found, and include 2 different types of flint stone, one grey and the other tan flint, a fine dark brown tinder that looks like it may be old rope fiber, and an Antique early hand forged Iron Strike-a-Light or Flint Striker in a triangular form with a finger loop. The strike-a-lite is an unusual shape and appears to be old as dirt with lots of naturally occurring pitting and rust in untouched condition. This is an early example of an Iron flint striking tool that was commonly carried by hunters, trappers, frontiersmen, outdoors men, travelers, campers, et al. These were used to start a campfire; perhaps on a gaming hunt to roast the day's kill, as well as for warmth and light. This is a good example of the small period Strike-a-Light / Flint Striker / Fire Starter, flint and tinder small tinder accoutrements that were prevalent at the time and was made to carry in this small tinder box and stored in a possibles bag or in the pocket. On the Frontier, nothing was ever discarded; and everything that could be recycled was used for a new & different purpose. Blacksmiths would take scraps of Iron, or sometimes old worn-out flat files, buggy springs or wagon wheel rims, and re-forge them into other useful objects. This piece appears to be hand forged from a scrap of Iron. This set has genuine aged patina and the untouched condition that collectors love to see. The Flint Striker was carried to start a fire by holding this tool in the hand with a finger in the loop, and hitting the edge of the Iron striker against a piece of stone flint rock to produce a spark in some light fire tinder like dried leaves to create a ember that can be coaxed into a flame; and then into a blazing camp fire. This was a necessary tool, and the only way to start a fire before matches came into general use around the 1830's. These small pocket sets date from the late 1700's up to the 1850 period or so; and was still carried as a handy tool to have if matches became wet and unusable. This would be perfect as a small paperweight / conversation piece, desk accessory or any Strike-a-Lite collection, Old West, Western Americana, hunting, Frontier, Trapper, Mountain Man, Hunter’s collector, Outdoors’s man, or Folk Art or Man cave display.
