A GREAT 19TH CENTURY PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN FOLK ART PAINT DECORATED 3-SLAT "WEDDING" ARMCHAIR IN THE BEST ORIGINAL PAINT WITH A RED BASE AND RED, GREEN, BLACK, BLUE AND MUSTARD YELLOW FLORAL DESIGNS AND VERY RARE "WEDDING BOWS" ON THE LEGS.
POSSIBLY SOUTH EASTERN, PENNSYLVANIA, CIRCA 1840-1860 IN NATIVE POPLAR AND ASH.
A WONDERFUL EARLY PAINTED FOLK ART PIECE OF PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN FURNITURE.
THESE ELABORATELY PAINTED CHAIRS WERE USUALLY MADE FOR WEDDING GIFTS.
THE ADDED "WEDDING BOW" DECORATION ON EACH LEG PLUS THE LACK OF SUBSTANTIAL WEAR SHOW US THAT THE PIECE WAS MADE TO BE DISPLAYED RATHER THAN USED.
ALTHOUGH THERE IS GOOD WEAR PATTERNS THROUGHOUT, THIS CHAIR WAS A KEEPSAKE AND PROBABLY WAS PLACED IN A FORMAL PARLOR.
THE FORM IS TYPICAL OF THE PERIOD WITH A CANTED, TURNED BACK POST WITH BALL FINIALS AND FEET.
THE GRADUATED AND SHAPED SLATS ARE WELL DONE AND THE FLAT AND CURVED ARMS ARE FULLY INTACT.
THE PAINT IS COMPLETELY ORIGINAL AND UNTOUCHED. IT IS BRIGHT AND GRUNGY AND HAS WONDERFUL PATINA.
The condition is fantastic.
THERE ARE NO REPAIRS OR RESTORATIONS EXCEPT THE LAST COLLECTOR JUST PUT ON A BRAND NEW RUSH SEAT SO THE CHAIR WILL LAST ABOUT 200 YEARS.
